Long Live The Pumpkin Queen

My thirty something granddaughter is a working mom with 3 children. She is also obsessed with the Nightmare Before Christmas. To try to get up-to-date, I read this book to find out what happens after Jack & Sally get married. Of course, it's another nightmare experience, albeit an interesting one. Written for teens, the book addresses Sally's doubts & insecurities. These are resolved when she awakens her sleeping town and embraces her role as Pumpkin Queen. A fun read.

I'm not easily scared, but this was a very scary book about the influence of German & American Nazis in the USA immediately prior to WWII. Most of the American Nazis and members of Congress who supported them were not held accountable for their propaganda efforts even after being indicted for sedition.

Philadelphia, Here I Come!

This play can be seen off Broadway this spring in NYC. It's a bit different because the main character, Gar, has a public voice as well as a private one that expresses his worries & doubts about moving to the US. There's also unrequited love, a father that doesn't communicate and, of course, a priest.

The Boys In The Boat
by Daniel Brown

Life has not provided any privilege to the 9 men from the University of Washington crew. The German government has subsidized and trained its oarsmen to assure a win in the 1936 Olympics held in Berlin during Hitler's rule. We know who won the big race and Brown's supplies the details, perhaps too much detail about all the races leading up to the Olympics. It's still a good read.

You Could Make This Place Beautiful
by Maggie Smith

Maggie Smith experienced a rather ugly divorce and wrote this book about trying to be the best person, mother and author until the divorce finally was finalized. She assures the reader that the book is not a tell all. One major theme is fighting to make her writing career accepted as real work, not just a side hustle. The occasional one sentence quotes were a bonus - short, sweet and pithy.

LOVED this book! Although it was a difficult topic to read about (infidelity and divorce) the author's style was like something I've never read before, sad and witty/entertaining at the same time.
